Hebden Bridge: inclusive, independent and community centred

If you’re looking for a quirky, picturesque market town with a high street like no other, Hebden Bridge ticks all the boxes.

Bustling artisan stores, cafes and art galleries will enchant and inspire, offering everything from vintage clothing to wool, records, original art and furniture. If you’re looking for familiar high street stores, you’ll just have to go elsewhere – Hebden Bridge communities are fierce supporters of local producers and small independent traders.

Thriving since the 1970s, and nestled in the Upper Calder Valley, this West Yorkshire market town has become a haven for creatives with inspiration at the end of every cobbled street, including galleries, artists’ studios, a historic picture house and home to the South Pennines Park office.

Inclusive, welcoming and host to a fabulous Happy Valley Pride, Hebden Bridge has famously been named the ‘most inclusive town in Great Britain’ and ‘the lesbian capital of the UK’ – which you can hear more about in our latest blog here.

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to enjoying a delicious meal in Hebden Bridge with lots of quirky independent cafes and restaurants serving flavours from across the world including pizzas by the river at Marco’s Café, Persian-inspired delicacies at Leila’s Kitchen, and vegan-friendly Muse Music and Love Café. Pubs, restaurants and bars also champion locally brewed ale including Hebden Bridge’s own hilltop brewery, Vocation.

If you’re bringing your furry friend, you’ll find lots of dog-friendly venues, including West Yorkshire’s first co-operative pub, The Fox and Goose; Stubbing Wharf which sits right on the canal; relaxed café-bar Mooch Café; and cosy wholesome food at The Shoulder of Mutton Inn.

They’ll also enjoy the meandering paths of the Rochdale Canal which runs through the heart of Hebden Bridge. Enjoy a charming waterside walk to the neighbouring town of Sowerby Bridge accompanied by pretty locks, beautiful views of the Upper Calder Valley and glimpses of the region’s historic mills and rich industrial past.

There’s also a more challenging circular route that takes you further into the valley to explore peaceful woodlands, wild moorland and views of the surrounding Yorkshire hills.

National Trust’s nearby Hardcastle Crags is a must-visit. Dog friendly in parts, this beautiful, wooded valley boasts 15 miles of stunning footpaths, a historic 19th century cotton mill, abundant wildlife and dedicated family events. There is also the Weaving Shed Café and a second-hand bookshop, which helps to fund the National Trust’s conservation work.

If you are thinking of visiting, make sure you take note of the thriving calendar of events in Hebden Bridge including the annual piano festival, burlesque, folk, steampunk, dance events, and a nine-day arts celebration.
